Personalized Organic Airbrush Tanning

A tan can do wonders for our appearance.  It emphasizes bone structure, evens out skin tones, makes teeth look whiter…  makes us look active, healthy… even affluent.  JFKWhen Hollywood wants to create a character who represents wealth and power along with charm, the actor usually has a beautiful tan.

But it is a sorry trick of nature that getting a tan by exposure to radiation (from the sun or tanning beds) can destroy the health of your skin and lead to cancer.  Skin damaged this way will dry out, prematurely wrinkle, and look uneven when the tan goes away, so we radiate it again to look our best – but this makes the problem and the need worse again.

[If you know your history, you know that one tan once won the presidency!]

A very abbreviated history of the
fashion of the tan

In the 1800’s it was fashionable to have ivory white skin.  This was a way of showing that you were a member of the elite (because only the working class had to be in the fields and exposed to the sun).

But during the 1900’s this fashion flipped.  The industrial revolution was taking most workers out of the sun and into the factories. Evidence of wealth showed on your skin if you could afford the leisure of being outdoors. Soon the fashion was to show off a glowing tan (especially during the winter months because this was evidence that you could afford to vacation in Florida or the islands).  A tan was always more attractive on those who only did it occasionally (when their lives and appearances were not weathered by hard work and constant exposure to the sun).

The lives of most people in America have been eased and this kind of tan has been broadly fashionable across the board for some time.
But science and medicine have been teaching us that tanning is bad for your health and appearance over the long run.  Radiation has always increased the risk of skin cancer (from the sun or from tanning beds).  Radiation exposure is greater now that there has been a thinning of the ozone layer.

Now there is a new fashion developing among the elite and spreading through society.  People are discovering now that they can have it all:  soft, healthy, youthful skin with the least risk of cancer AND a perfect tan when they want it.  These people always cover their exposed skin with sunscreen when they have had more than 30 minutes of sun for the day (SPF 30 for complete protection) and they get a custom professional airbrush tan whenever they want that healthy glow and control over their appearance. There is no need to be white during the winter months any longer.

Hollywood and the fashion industry have known about airbrush tanning for years

When you look in the magazines and see pictures of celebrities with their perfect skin and golden tans, you are often looking at the results of an airbrush tan that was applied by a professional.  Photographers want their models to stay out of the sun.  Radiation tans dry out the skin and that shows in the photography.  Places that burn don’t look right in some lighting conditions.  Makeup is needed to address the problem but the less the model needs makeup the better the photographic results.  Smooth and supple skin looks good to the camera.  Exposure to the sun can drastically shorten the career of any professional model.  (Mature models are very rarely “sun bunnies.”)  But there are swimsuit shoots where a tan is required (without any tan lines showing from another swimsuit of another cut).  Airbrush tanning is the way to go when a model gets a swimsuit shoot on short notice.  The camera loves the additional contrast provided by a light airbrush tan on healthy skin.  This goes a long way to providing a beautiful contrast to a light-colored or white swimsuit (or wedding dress, for that matter).

Models and actors have established relationships with their airbrush tanning professionals, so they can have control over their results.  Different people have different pH levels in their skin and your airbrush tanning provider can improve the results of the tanning after the first visit using feedback from the clients.  (This is why it is best not to have your first airbrush tan immediately before a special event, but to try it first at least two weeks before the special event to be sure it is just the way you want it.  This gives time for that first tan to fade away completely in case there are any unwanted surprises in the way your skin reacts to the process and this allows for adjustments to be made when you have the second tan applied a couple days before that special event.)

Actors, models, dancers - performers and others with a professional need to maintain the best appearance may also be able to deduct their tanning costs as a business expense!

New tanning methods are available that
are safe and give incredible results

Recent developments in tanning are very different from the old days.  (Many of us remember the orange look of sunless tanning products back in time.)  Not all airbrush application is the same today either.  You need to check around.  Some chemicals are used in this industry today that may not be completely safe.  But at The Coppersheen Studio we have gone out of our way to bring you the safest method for tanning available today using organic tanning solutions.  DHA, the agent that colors the skin is refined from sugar beets.  (The chemical reaction that takes place on your exposed layer of skin – the dead cells that protect our bodies – is very much the same as what happens when you cut an apple and the exposed part of the apple turns from white to brown.)  The other ingredients in our solution are even safe for ingestion such as the grapefruit extract used as a preservative.

Our methods protect your health
as well as your look

(and everyone looks sexier with a tan!)

You need to have your tan applied by a properly trained professional.  Spray tanning booths have been around but they increase the risk of inhaling the solution and expose skin types that should not be exposed to the solution.  (Some of the chemicals used in the booths are not as safe either.)    Different persons have different pH levels in their skin, which causes variation in how the skin changes color.  More important is that different parts of our bodies have different pH levels and different concentrations of dead skin or dryness which also changes the way the color takes.

In a spray tanning booth the solution is sprayed on the whole body without the control that is possible when a tan is applied by a technician/artist who understands how to give the best results.  A spray tanning booth application often results in bad looking “orange” hands and feet  and can leave white lines in some places and bunching or dripping of the solution in other places…  not to mention the reduced safety when you risk getting a bit of the solution into your lungs when you are sprayed by a machine in an enclosed space.

At The Coppersheen Studio our artist-technicians guide you through the process using a specially designed fan and filter system to catch the overspray, and we can communicate clearly with you when the tan is about to be applied to the face to ensure safety and the best tanning results.
In about 20 minutes you will have a wonderful tan the way you want it.  (With or without tan lines.)

A custom professional airbrush tan gives you that healthy glow, promotes confidence, slenderizes and reduces the appearance of cellulite. Why spend 3 to 5 days a week in a tanning bed promoting a wrinkled leathery appearance while putting you in danger of skin cancer? In about 30 minutes, you can have a safe, naturally fading airbrush tan that lasts 5-12 days! It is our mission to give you a natural looking, beautiful glow without damaging your skin or health!

Paradoxically - if you are the kind of person who never tans but burns when exposed to the sun - your habit of staying away from the sun and the nature of your skin type may give you the most perfect of tans using the services of The Coppersheen Studio – the first custom organic airbrush tanning service in the Portland, Maine area.
